The City of White Plains has officially doubled its parking grace period, increasing it from 6 minutes to 12 minutes at all municipal parking locations. The change is designed to give drivers a little extra flexibility when appointments run late, meals take longer than expected, or unexpected delays happen.
Here’s how it works:
- Once your paid parking session expires, a 12-minute grace period automatically begins.
- During that time, parking enforcement officers can see that your vehicle is still within the grace period and cannot issue a parking ticket until the full 12 minutes have passed.
- The policy applies to all municipal parking, including:
- On-street metered parking
- Municipal parking garages
- Surface parking lots
- Time-limited parking spaces
For example, if you’re parked in a one-hour space and your paid time expires, you’ll now have an additional 12 minutes before enforcement begins.
The grace period applies regardless of how you pay for parking, whether through the Park White Plains app, a pay station, or traditional parking meters.
According to city officials, the goal is to make parking more convenient for residents and visitors while recognizing that unexpected delays are part of everyday life. White Plains also remains one of the few municipalities in Westchester County to offer a parking grace period, and now one of the longest in the region.
